Four
South Dakota communities went home with $10,000 in prizes
following the presentation of the South Dakota Achievement
Awards at the Governor’s Economic Development Conference held
May 11 in Pierre.
The awards program, a friendly competition between South
Dakota communities, focuses on individual project
accomplishments for the past year. The cash prizes are donated
by the following sponsors: Black Hills Fibercom, Black Hills
Power, East River Electric Power Cooperative, MidAmerican
Energy Company, Montana-Dakota Utilities Company, Otter Tail
Power Company, Rushmore Electric Power Cooperative, West River
Electric Association, and Xcel Energy.
Four prizes of $2500 were awarded. A winner was chosen in
each of the three population categories with the final winner
selected at large.
More than 5000 – Sturgis for improvements to their
park
1000-5000 – Winner for the Spruce Up Winner Project
Less than 1000 – Centerville for retaining their
pharmacy
At large – Alexandria for their new activity center
The following communities were also recognized with
certificates of innovation:
Belle Fourche – drug awareness
Britton – new swimming pool
Brookings – Swiftel Center
Canistota – swimming pool improvements
Doland – spruce up Main Street
Flandreau – new swimming pool
Hill City – new Boys & Girls Club
Ipswich – Trail Days
Parkston – baseball field improvements
Pierpont – storytelling festival
Pierre – Capital City Queen
Platte – The Creamery
