Pierre, SD – Gov. Mike Rounds announced today, September 10, that Mellette County will receive $87,500 in Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds to construct a 4,256 square foot ambulance and fire hall.

“Mellette County currently has no facility to house its ambulance equipment and there simply isn’t room in the existing fire hall. Right now ambulances are parked on the street or in a private yard and that really slows response time,” Gov. Rounds said.

“Providing the best emergency response time is critical in rural South Dakota. As a state, we need to do what we can to make sure that Mellette County has the financial assistance it needs to make sure this project is completed in a timely fashion,” he said.

Total project costs exceed $167,000. “This is a tremendous financial commitment for Mellette County and I commend city leaders for their dedication to this project,” Gov. Rounds said.

The Governor noted that all CDBG projects are an important part of the state’s 2010 Initiative goal to stabilize rural populations through community development.  “This is just one more step we can take to help serve the people of our state,” he concluded.
